PS 8, currently preK - 5 in Brooklyn District 13, is a creative learning community that is dedicated to having all of its members flourish. Our mission is academic excellence and, in its pursuit, we are committed to the development of the whole child.

We wish for our children to continue to experience this model into Middle School through the 8th grade within their community.

Here is an example of our whole child approach, a routine writing assignment of one our 5th graders:

“Dinner's ready!” Shouted my mother. Her voice reminded me of a crane, hoarse but cheerful.  Read more ...

When I got to the dinner table, I saw a feast of chicken soup, noodles, egg rolls, and beef laid out for me. My two brothers, Chen and Kai, were already digging in. Their faces were covered with noodles, and their mouths were lined with soy sauce. My mom finally got up from the kitchen and sat down next to me. My heart was filled with joy as I gazed at Chen and Kai, laughing merrily at each other. My eyes fell over that empty seat next to my mother. My dad had been gone for a month now, but he was due to come back on Friday. I got up from the kitchen table to go get some napkins, when I heard an alarming sound. Plates were bumping into each other and masking a loud clacking sound! I heard rumbles and shouts from below me. I looked frantically at my mother, who was wearing a grief-stricken look on her face. The rumbling got Louder and Louder and Louder until I had to cover my ears tightly.

My mother led my brothers and I down the stairs towards the door of our house. Suddenly, the house started collapsing as a large, heavy piece of wood hit my mother on the head. She fell down in a heap on the floor.

Please wake up!” Kai yelled desperately.

I just stood there, speechless. My mouth was wide open in shock and disbelief.

Go!” I shouted to Chen and Kai. “Go out the door! I'll be fine!” Chen and Kai looked at me worriedly, then took off. I tried with all my might to lift my mother off the floor. I dragged her all the way to the door, but couldn't pull her any further. I remember that horrible feeling I had when a floorboard from the ceiling came loose and hit me.

The last things I remember were the helicopter and the people shouting “take her to the hospital! Quickly! Hurry!” I remember asking about my mother, and people just looked at me sadly, and I remember my father gazing down at me.
