Rundown Playground In Heights Gets New Life
Work Begins at Squibb Park; Candidate Pressed for Reopening

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS – For at least five years, the Squibb Playground in the North Heights near the waterfront has been closed to the public...

...A call to the Parks Department revealed that “Squibb Park is expected to open in the spring. Our intention in Phase 1 is to put some skate elements in the park as well as the improved landscaping, new fencing and new pavement. Work has already begun on the comfort station. Total construction cost is $1.2 million.”

...As of yesterday, 165 people have signed [Biviano's] online petition about reopening Squibb to provide an alternative play space for P.S. 8’s kids -- on top of 700 people who have already signed a hard-copy petition.

...the Biviano campaign, said that before the petition, “There was basically a breakdown in communication – that option [reopening Squibb Park] had been forgotten.” Then, he said, the campaign took it to the Parks Department – “We started to poke around and see if that conversation could get going again.”

...Biviano also contacted the administration at P.S. 8, and asked them to get Parks to call. Soon, things began to get on track.

...“I’m an engineer,” said Biviano. “I hopped that fence in my dress [shoes] and my slacks, and I surveyed [the park] when we started our petition, and I knew we weren’t far from a solution. I’m also a P.S. 8 parent...
